CRCS Call for Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scholars

The Harvard Center for Research on Computation and Society (CRCS) solicits applications for its Postdoctoral Fellows and Visiting Scholars Programs for the 2018-2019 academic year. CRCS provides Postdoctoral Fellows with an annual salary plus travel and research funding to allow Fellows to engage in independent research. Fellows typically spend between one to three years at CRCS. Visiting Scholars ordinarily bring their own support, but CRCS occasionally offers supplemental funding.

We seek researchers enthusiastic to interact with computer scientists and colleagues from other disciplines and who have a demonstrated interest in connecting their research agenda with societal issues. We currently have activities in the following areas:

  • Digital Economy (Chen, Parkes, Singer)
  • Healthcare Technology (Gajos, Grosz, Kuindersma, Seltzer)
  • Privacy, Security, and Secure Systems (Calmon, Chong, Dwork, Mickens, Vadhan)
  • Social Computing for Societal Problems (Chen, Na Li, Parkes, Waldo)
  • Fairness in Machine Learning (Calmon, Dwork, Seltzer, Zittrain)
  • Scientific Preservation and Reproducibility (Doshi-Velez, Dwork, Seltzer)
  • Network Science (Mitzenmacher, Singer)
  • Text Analysis Algorithms and Visualizations for Societal Insight (Shieber)
  • Citizen Science (Gajos, Sweeney)
  • Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence (Dwork, Seltzer, Shieber, Zittrain)

The ideal researcher will have a technical background in an area related to computer science and a desire to creatively use those skills to address problems of societal importance. CRCS is a highly collaborative environment, and we expect Fellows and Scholars to engage with researchers both inside and outside of computer science. CRCS research has led to important artifacts such as the Helios Voting System and the tools being constructed in the Privacy Tools Project.

CRCS offers Fellows and Visiting Scholars numerous opportunities to engage with Harvard faculty, students and scholars in computer science and other disciplines including: the bi-weekly CRCS lunch seminar series, the CRCS annual symposium, various informal CRCS lunches, and other research group meetings. Additionally, CRCS has close ties with Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, and CRCS Fellows are included in many Berkman Klein Fellows' gatherings.

Harvard University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. We are particularly interested in attracting women and underrepresented groups to participate in CRCS.

Application Procedure

A complete application will include:

  • A cover letter addressing what you can contribute, which faculty members with whom you would most like to work, and what you hope to gain from your time at CRCS.
  • CV
  • 3-5 page research statement
  • At most, three research papers
  • Three letters of reference

Submit your application using this link: https://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/7927

The cover letter should describe what appeals to you about joining CRCS and describe how you would contribute to the existing community. Please make clear in your cover letter whether you are applying for the Postdoctoral Fellow or Visiting Scholar position, as well as whether you have funding.

References for Postdoctoral Fellows should send their letters directly, and Visiting Scholar applicants may provide a list of references rather than having letters sent.

The application deadline for full consideration is Friday, December 1, 2017.

If you need to submit later, please do reach out to Kimia Mavon at kmavon@g.harvard.edu
